Checking Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

Keep reading, and you’ll understand how to check transmission fluid:

  1. Turn the engine on to warm up your engine a bit before proceeding.
  2. Set your park brake and open your hood.
  3. Locate your transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel-drive cars, it’s typically found to the right of the oil dipstick, but you can always check your owner’s manual for its location.
  4. Remove the transmission fluid dipstick and touch the fluid, moving it around between your thumb and first finger. It should look pretty clear, with a slight pink hue. If it appears dirty or smells burnt, bring your vehicle to the Ron Carter Chevrolet service center near Alvin.
  5. Wipe off the dipstick with an old rag and insert it back into the receptacle. Check the transmission fluid level. If it’s under the “Full” mark, use a funnel and add more until you reach the full mark.

Transmission Fluid: FAQs

A sealed transmission is used in many modern vehicles to limit the amount of wasted transmission fluid, but it still needs to be replaced periodically. Since it is sealed, there’s no dipstick to check the fluid level, so you’ll need our service team to check it for you to avoid any problems. These are some signs that it’s time to replace your transmission fluid:

  • You can hear odd noises when changing gears.
  • The gears hesitate when you shift.
  • During acceleration, there’s an apparent delay when shifting gears.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Check your transmission fluid once a month when you check your oil and power steering fluid and before hitting the road around League City. As always, consult your owner’s manual for more specific recommendations and a maintenance schedule for your make and model.
